New Mexico Governor Implements 30-Day Ban on Firearms in Albuquerque and County

Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham of New Mexico has taken a bold step to combat gun violence in the region by announcing a 30-day ban on carrying firearms in public areas or state property in Albuquerque and its county. The governor believes that this ban is a necessary measure to address the escalating issue of gun violence.

In response to criticism, some argue that the ban is unconstitutional and infringes on Second Amendment rights. However, Gov. Lujan Grisham issued the ban as a declaration of a public health emergency, granting the state access to additional resources. The aim is to curb gun violence and protect the citizens of Bernalillo County.

Under this executive order, open and concealed firearms are prohibited on state property, public schools, and public parks in the affected areas. It’s important to note that law enforcement and licensed security guards are exempt from this ban. Additionally, residents with gun permits are still allowed to possess firearms on private property.

To ensure the safety of those traveling with firearms, individuals must make sure that the weapon is inoperable during transit. This can be achieved through securing it in a locked box or using a trigger lock.

Violators of the ban can face fines of up to $5,000 as a consequence of disregarding the new regulations. The governor’s decision was strongly influenced by recent tragic incidents, including the fatal shootings of children in the area. Especially impactful was the death of an 11-year-old boy outside a minor-league baseball stadium in Albuquerque.

It is noteworthy that Gov. Lujan Grisham is a Democrat, and many view this action as part of her ongoing efforts to address the issue of gun violence in the state. With this temporary ban, she hopes to make a significant contribution towards curbing the alarming trend of gun-related incidents in the region.

As New Mexico battles the challenges posed by gun violence, Gov. Lujan Grisham’s decision demonstrates her commitment to ensuring public safety and finding effective solutions to protect the lives of her constituents.
