Title: Unity Amends Controversial Monetization Plan Following Backlash: No Fees for Personal or Plus Plans
Unity, the popular game engine, has recently made changes to its highly debated monetization plan after receiving significant criticism from game developers. The company initially announced its intention to charge developers each time a game utilizing the Unity engine was installed.
The controversial Unity Runtime Fee, set to commence in January 2024, would have exclusively applied to games that surpassed specific revenue and install count thresholds. However, the announcement was met with uproar and backlash from the gaming community.
Responding to the outcry, Unity issued an apology and vowed to make revisions to the policy. The company has now confirmed that users of Unity’s Personal or Plus plans will not be subjected to per-install fees. Unity Pro and Unity Enterprise users, however, will still be subject to the fees.
It is important to note that existing games will not be affected by the introduction of these fees. The implemented fee structure will only be applicable to games created with or upgraded to the Long Term Support (LTS) version releasing in 2024 or later.
To qualify for the fees, games must reach a revenue threshold of $1,000,000 and have 1,000,000 initial engagements. Unity aims to ensure that smaller developers are not burdened by these charges and that they primarily target more commercially successful projects.
Marc Whitten, a representative from Unity, apologized for the entire situation and acknowledged the necessity for better communication and the incorporation of feedback. In an effort to maintain transparency and address concerns, Unity has closed down two of its offices and canceled a town hall meeting due to a credible death threat.
These recent changes reflect Unity’s commitment to maintaining a fair and collaborative environment for game developers. By exempting users of Personal and Plus plans from the fees and pledging to address concerns, Unity hopes to regain the trust and support of the affected development community.
