Title: Grand Theft Auto 5 Source Code Leaked Over a Year After Rockstar Games Hack
In a shocking turn of events, the source code for the highly popular game Grand Theft Auto 5 (GTA 5) was leaked on Christmas Eve. This leak comes more than a year after the notorious Lapsus$ hackers breached Rockstar Games’ security systems, stealing corporate data. The leaked source code was quickly shared across various platforms, including Discord, a dark web website, and a Telegram channel previously associated with the hackers.
The leak was first noticed by the owner of a Grand Theft Auto leak channel on Telegram, known as ‘Phil,’ who shared links to download the stolen source code. Alongside the links, Phil posted a screenshot of one of the folders, showcasing the extent of the breach. Interestingly, the channel owner paid tribute to Arion Kurtaj, a member of the Lapsus$ hacking group, who had previously leaked pre-release videos of Grand Theft Auto 6.
This recent breach can be traced back to the Lapsus$ hackers’ attack on Rockstar Games in 2022. During the attack, the threat actors gained access to the company’s internal Slack server and Confluence wiki. As a result, they claimed to have stolen both GTA 5 and GTA 6 source code and assets, some of which were leaked on forums and Telegram channels.
The authenticity of the leaked source code, however, remains uncertain as independent verification has yet to be conducted. Nevertheless, the Lapsus$ group’s hacking abilities cannot be overlooked. They were known for their expertise in social engineering and SIM swapping attacks, which targeted various companies, including Uber, Microsoft, and Nvidia.
In response to the Lapsus$ attacks and other similar incidents, the Department of Homeland Security has carefully analyzed their tactics and offered recommendations to prevent future breaches. This leak serves as a reminder for the gaming industry to remain vigilant and take necessary measures to thwart potential hacker threats.
It is important to note that while the Lapsus$ group appears to be less active now, some of its members are believed to have joined forces with the hacking collective known as Scattered Spider. This group has been observed utilizing similar tactics, raising concerns about potential future breaches.
As Rockstar Games continues to assess the impact of the latest leak, the gaming community anxiously awaits any official statements regarding the security of their beloved game series. Gamers and fans of GTA 5 remain hopeful that necessary actions will be taken to ensure the protection of their personal information and intellectual property in the virtual world.
