Title: “Night Swim Fails to Overthrow Box Office Dominance of ‘Wonka'”
In a slow January at the box office, the horror thriller “Night Swim” made a moderate debut, landing in second place and earning $12 million from 3,200 theaters across North America. However, despite its solid performance, it was unable to dethrone the reigning champion, “Wonka,” which continued to dominate the charts with $14.4 million in its fourth weekend.
Internationally, “Night Swim” also struggled to make a splash, earning just $5.7 million from 36 markets. This brought its global total to $17.7 million, slightly surpassing its production budget of $15 million.
Unfortunately for the film, both critics and audiences were unimpressed, with a meager 27% score on Rotten Tomatoes and a “C” CinemaScore. The negative reception adds further disappointment to the Blumhouse and Atomic Monster collaboration as “Night Swim” marks their first release together, headed by industry veterans Jason Blum and James Wan.
On the other hand, “Wonka” has maintained its popularity throughout the holiday season, raking in an impressive $164.6 million domestically and a whopping $465 million worldwide. As the only major release during this traditionally slow period, it has managed to captivate audiences and retain its grip on first place.
Meanwhile, in other box office news, the animated comedy “Migration” secured the third spot, collecting $10.5 million from 3,712 venues. With $78 million domestically and $150 million worldwide, the film has proven to be a successful addition to the box office charts.
DC’s highly-anticipated “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” took fourth place with $10.6 million. Although slightly underperforming expectations given its hefty $205 million budget, it’s still off to a decent start.
Sony’s comedy “Anyone but You” rounded out the top five with $9.5 million, accumulating a solid total of $43.7 million after three weeks.
In a final note, A24’s sports drama “The Iron Claw,” starring Zac Efron and Jeremy Allen White, celebrated crossing the $20 million mark domestically. The film, surpassing its $16 million budget, has proven to be a success, currently standing at an impressive $24.3 million in earnings.
While “Night Swim” may not have achieved the box office success it hoped for, “Wonka” continues to dominate, solidifying its status as the go-to film of the season. Moviegoers can anticipate more exciting releases in the coming months as Hollywood gears up for a diverse lineup to captivate audiences worldwide.
