Title: Western New York Initiates Annual Rabies Vaccine Bait Drop to Protect Animals
Western New York is taking proactive steps to prevent the spread of rabies in animals through the implementation of an annual rabies vaccine bait drop. As part of the initiative, ground bait distribution is scheduled to take place in Erie County between July 29 and August 3, with aircraft dropping vaccine packets across multiple counties in mid-August if weather conditions permit.
The vaccine packets, colored in green, resemble the size of a quarter and will be dispersed from the sky. This method not only ensures the protection of wildlife populations but also minimizes the risk of transmission to humans and pets. It is important for residents to refrain from disturbing any vaccine packet they may come across. Typically, these packets are consumed by animals within four days, while any leftovers will dissolve harmlessly.
To handle the vaccine packets, it is recommended to wear gloves or use a plastic bag or paper towel. Additionally, residents are urged to wash their hands immediately if they come into direct contact with the vaccine or its packets. As an extra precaution during the bait distribution, it is advised to supervise children’s outdoor activities and confine dogs and cats indoors.
While the baits and vaccines are not harmful to domestic animals, consuming multiple baits may cause animals to vomit. Therefore, it is strongly advised not to risk being bitten by trying to remove the bait from a pet’s mouth.
The success of this bait drop initiative is a result of a partnership between Western New York and the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA). The collaboration has allowed for a systematic approach to ensure the effectiveness of the program.
