Title: Japan’s SLIM Lander Makes Historic Lunar Landing Amidst Technical Challenges
In a major achievement for Japan’s space agency, the Smart Lander for Investigating Moon (SLIM) successfully touched down on the lunar surface. This marks Japan’s inaugural lunar mission, bringing the country to the elite group of nations that have reached the moon.
Unlike previous missions, SLIM aimed for a highly precise landing zone, targeting an area of just 100 meters. In contrast, previous missions utilized much larger landing zones of 10 kilometers wide. However, the mission faced technical challenges right from the beginning.
Shortly after touchdown, the lander encountered trouble with its solar batteries, which made it difficult to confirm the exact landing zone. Furthermore, one of the lander’s main engines lost thrust, resulting in a slightly rougher landing than anticipated.
Nevertheless, autonomous probes released by SLIM sent back images of the lander on the lunar surface. However, to everyone’s surprise, the lander appeared to be upside down in the images. The lander ultimately landed approximately 55 meters away from its intended target, nestled between two craters near the Shioli crater.
Unfortunately, due to the landing mishap, SLIM’s solar panels are currently facing the wrong direction, preventing it from generating power. However, scientists remain hopeful that once the Moon’s daytime cycle begins, the probe will be able to recharge.
JAXA project manager Shinichiro Sakai expressed excitement over the images sent back by the lander, describing the mission as a “perfect score” for its pinpoint landing. Sakai was particularly pleased with the performance of the two autonomous probes deployed during the mission, LEV-1 and LEV-2, which successfully captured and transmitted images back to Earth.
With this achievement, Japan has become the fifth country, after the United States, the Soviet Union, China, and India, to successfully reach the moon’s surface. The SLIM mission holds significant importance for Japan, as it seeks to regain confidence in its space technology following several recent failures.
Despite the technical hiccups, the successful landing of SLIM on the moon is a remarkable achievement for Japan’s space agency. As scientists continue to analyze the data collected by the mission, the nation’s space exploration efforts are expected to gain further momentum and recognition on the global stage.
