Title: Microsoft Announces Extension to Windows 10 Security Support, Introduces Subscription-Based ESU Program
Microsoft has recently disclosed that full security support for its widely used operating system, Windows 10, will come to an end on October 14, 2025. Despite this announcement, the tech giant plans to introduce Extended Security Updates (ESU) for customers who are unable or reluctant to transition to Windows 11.
The Extended Security Updates (ESU) program is specifically designed to ensure the continuity and security of Windows 10 systems after the official support ends. However, to avail this ongoing protection, users will incur a yearly subscription fee. Although Microsoft has yet to reveal the pricing for the ESU program, industry experts anticipate it may be similar to the Windows 7 ESU program.
In addition to the ESU option, Microsoft is also offering another solution for Windows 10 users through its cloud-based service called Windows 365. This innovative service allows users to access and utilize Windows 11 on their existing Windows 10 machines, offering an alternative for those hesitant to upgrade.
Microsoft’s announcement has garnered support from the US Public Interest Research Group (PIRG), as it recognizes that the extension of support for Windows 10 will help reduce electronic waste. PIRG suggests that Microsoft could further prevent hardware waste by automatically extending support for all users, reducing the need for frequent hardware replacements.
Under the ESU program, Microsoft has outlined its plans to offer three years of continued support to educational institutions, public sector organizations, and small and medium-sized businesses. Moreover, individuals may also be eligible for one year of extended support, with the possibility of further extensions in certain cases. However, the company has not yet provided specific details about an ESU program catered to individual consumers.
The move to extend support for Windows 10 reflects Microsoft’s commitment to ensuring the security and uninterrupted functioning of its operating systems. This additional support option offers customers greater flexibility during the transition to Windows 11 while minimizing the risk of potential security vulnerabilities.
As Microsoft prepares to sunset Windows 10’s full security support, the introduction of the ESU program signifies the company’s determination to provide ongoing services for customers who choose to remain on the older operating system. With the announcement of the ESU program, users now have the opportunity to extend the lifespan of their Windows 10 systems, providing enhanced security and a more sustainable solution for the future.
