In a move that will positively impact the lives of millions of workers, the minimum wage in 22 states is set to increase starting January 1st. An estimated 9.9 million workers will be directly affected by these wage hikes, which are expected to inject approximately $6.95 billion into the economy, according to the Economic Policy Institute (EPI).
Notably, 38 cities and counties across the United States have also decided to raise their minimum wages above state minimums, further benefitting low-income workers. However, it is worth mentioning that 20 states will still maintain the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour.
These wage increases are long overdue, especially considering that nearly half of the 17.6 million workers who earn less than $15 an hour reside in these 20 states. With the cost of living skyrocketing since the federal minimum wage was last adjusted in 2009, inflation and rising costs have forced many Americans to deplete their savings and accumulate significant levels of debt.
Although the overall economy appears to be thriving, minimum-wage workers have struggled to make ends meet, facing difficulty in affording basic necessities such as rent and essential goods. The wage increase, consequently, comes as a much-needed relief for these individuals.
Analyzing the data further, the EPI reveals that nearly 58% of the workers who will benefit from the wage increase are women. Additionally, 9% of these workers are Black, while almost 38% are Hispanic. This demonstrates the disproportionate impact of low wages on certain demographics and highlights the significance of these raises in combating income inequality.
Importantly, over a quarter of those who will benefit from the wage increase are parents, underscoring the profound positive effect these raises will have on their standards of living. Higher wages mean enhanced opportunities for parents to provide for their families and secure a brighter future.
Looking ahead, Senate Democrats have introduced the Raise the Wage Act of 2023. The proposed legislation aims to gradually increase the federal minimum wage to $17 per hour by 2028. If passed, it would mark a significant step toward fairer compensation for workers across the country.
As millions of minimum-wage workers eagerly anticipate the new year and the increased earnings it will bring, these wage hikes serve as a reminder that progress is being made towards economic equity and a better future for all workers.
